1. The Initial Consultation
This is where the "blueprint" is created. You meet with the tailor to define the suit's purpose.
-
Fabric Selection: You choose the weight, weave, and composition (e.g., Super 120s wool, linen, or silk blends).
-
Style Definition: You specify the lapel type (peak, notch, or shawl), number of buttons, vent style, and pocket types.
-
The Details: Choosing the lining (silk or Bemberg), button material (horn, mother-of-pearl, or corozo), and thread colors for the buttonholes.
2. Precise Measurement
A tailor takes 20 to 30 distinct measurements. They aren't just looking at length and width; they are noting:
-
Posture: Does your back arch? Do you lean forward?
-
Shoulder Slope: Is one shoulder lower than the other?
-
Prominence: The "drop" from chest to waist and the seat shape.
3. Pattern Drafting
"Made-to-Measure" which adjusts an existing template, this pattern is then chalked onto the fabric and cut by hand.
4. The "Canvas" Construction
The internal structure of the jacket is created. A layer of horsehair canvas is stitched (not glued) between the outer fabric and the lining. This allows the suit to "breathe" and mold to your body over time.
5. The Fittings (The Iterative Process)
A bespoke suit is never finished in one go. It usually requires three distinct stages:
-
The Basted Fitting: The suit is temporarily held together by white "basting" thread. It has no lining or pockets. The tailor literally rips seams apart and pins them back together on your body to refine the silhouette.
-
The Forward Fitting: The suit looks more complete. Pockets are in, and the canvas is set. The focus here is on the "drape" and the break of the trousers.
-
The Finbar/Final Fitting: Final adjustments to sleeve length and any fine tuning required for an exceptional drape and look.
6. Hand-Finishing
Once the fit is perfect, the final details are added by hand:
-
Milanesa Buttonholes: Hand-stitched silk buttonholes. (Optional)
-
Pick Stitching: Tiny, visible stitches along the lapel edges that signal handcraftsmanship
